Program Overview


This PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is structured to provide a broad base of skills, knowledge and experience to the entry-level practitioner. Candidates interested in pursuing PGY2 training and/or in careers as clinical pharmacists in the acute and/or ambulatory care setting are encouraged to apply.

Rotation Sites – Residents may complete rotations at multiple sites

Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center

  • Wisconsin's largest private hospital, Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center is a premiere destination for world-class patient care, having treated patients from all 50 states and 13 countries. It is internationally known for its expertise in heart care and oncology. Located on the south side of Milwaukee, Aurora St. Luke's also offers exceptional specialty care in areas such as critical care, abdominal/cardiothoracic transplant and neurosciences. It is the home of the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic.

Aurora Sinai Medical Center

  • A teaching hospital located in downtown Milwaukee, Aurora Sinai Medical Center offers unique pharmaceutical-care experiences, including neonatal/perinatal care, geriatrics, Parkinson's disease, internal medicine and intensive care.

Aurora Psychiatric Hospital

  • Child, adolescent, adult and older-adult services are provided on an outpatient, partial-hospital, residential and inpatient basis at Aurora Psychiatric Hospital in Wauwatosa, WI.

Specific Learning Experiences

Residents complete core learning experiences in drug policy, administration and direct patient care (including medicine, surgery, oncology and cardiology), and customize their residency by choosing elective experiences based on individual needs and interests.

  • Ambulatory care: Family medicine clinic, epilepsy clinic, anticoagulation clinic, transplant clinic and outpatient oncology clinic
  • Clinical teaching: Pharmacy students, teaching certificate option
  • Critical care: Cardiovascular ICU, cardiac ICU, solid organ transplant, cardiothoracic transplant, surgical ICU, medical respiratory ICU, neuro/neurosurgical ICU, neonatal ICU, operating room services, infectious disease and emergency medicine
  • Drug-use policy: Medication use evaluation, Pharmacy & Therapeutic Committee, drug information, development of clinical policies and procedures, drug policy, medication safety and investigational drug protocols
  • Medicine: General/internal medicine, medicine teaching service, geriatrics, Parkinson's disease, cardiac medicine, surgical medicine and inpatient psychiatry services
  • Oncology: Stem-cell transplant, immunotherapy, and inpatient and outpatient oncology services
  • Orientation: Computer systems, drug distribution, personnel, policies, patient care, work flow and department structures
  • Pharmacy informatics: Participate in evaluation and development of technology applications; understand how P&T, formulary changes, policy, and safety/operational initiatives impact pharmacy IS team; learn the basic roles, skills, and functions of the Willow, automation, and affiliated IT teams.
  • Practice management/administration: Budgeting, personnel management, financial management, managed care, development and implementation of new services
  • Professional development: Year-long residency project, rotation projects, in-services, staffing, visits to other institutions, professional organizations, teaching and precepting, ACPE continuing education presentations, interviewing/recruiting, medication safety experiences, preparations for The Joint Commission and more.
