Our curriculum provides a broad-based educational experience, while also allowing flexibility to meet individual educational needs. We accomplish this through a balance of required and elective rotations and a strong, clinically based didactic schedule.

Required Rotations: The ACGME requires that TY curriculum include six months of "fundamental clinical skills" rotations, one month of Emergency Medicine, and one month of ambulatory care. To meet these guidelines our requirements include:

4 months Aurora St. Luke’s Internal Medicine Teaching Service (IMTS)
1 month General Medical Wards – Aurora Sinai Medical Center or 1 month Coronary Care Intensive Care Unit or 1 month in the Medical Intensive Care Unit
1 month Ambulatory Care Clinic
1 month Emergency Medicine
5 months elective rotations


Internal Medicine Teaching Service (IMTS):

The IMTS is an Internal Medicine ward service comprised of four teams in a every-fourth-day call schedule with rotating night coverage. The teams are staffed by full-time and voluntary faculty, senior Internal Medicine residents and IM/TY interns. Teams also include medical students, Physician Assistant students and in-house Pharmacy residents. Members of the Internal Medicine staff voluntarily admit patients to the on-call team, providing a wide spectrum of pathology and patient demography.

Unlike many university programs, there are no competing ward services, such as Cardiology or Nephrology, to limit access to interesting patients. Twenty to thirty percent of the admissions are from private staff who have agreed to work with the teams under a set of guidelines designed to assure appropriate staff supervision and resident autonomy. The remaining seventy to eighty percent of patients are "house cases" and are admitted to the team under the supervision of the team’s teaching attending. Our daily morning report is usually attended by at least two faculty members and all IMTS housestaff. It includes a number of specialty conferences, including a monthly emergency medicine conference, ambulatory care conferences, and pharmacy conference. Also invited are "consultants", including specialists and visiting professors.


Elective Rotations:

Our large specialty staff, in-house residency programs, and academic affiliations allow us to offer a wide variety of clinical rotations at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center and affiliated institutions. Our list of elective rotations, some offered at our affiliated campuses include:

Elective rotation assignments are finalized only after Transitional Year residents have had a chance to talk to the previous year’s Transitional Year residents, review written rotation evaluations, and discuss the curriculum and educational goals with the program directors. Changes in rotation choices are frequently allowed throughout the year.


Open Elective:

Residents have an opportunity to design a rotation not routinely offered, such as a research month, a third world experience, or a clinical rotation not normally provided in our curriculum. Over the last several years, one third of our residents have taken advantage of this opportunity.



Because most of our didactics are attended by all of Aurora St. Luke's house staff, our conferences are clinically oriented and broad-based. Our staff-wide conference schedule (weekly unless otherwise specified) includes:

Core Issues Seminar Series:
These half-day sessions focus on issues related to medicine and health care not normally taught at the bedside. These conferences are typically followed by a Transitional Year Resident business meeting and social event.

Annual Transitional Year residents also experience a 2-day retreat. Relevant career and professional issues are discussed in a relaxed, enjoyable environment. Spouses and family members are welcome.


Evaluation and Feedback:

We attempt to provide prompt evaluation and feedback to all residents. Our close involvement in the rotational and didactic curriculum allows us to know our interns well and to be available for direction and feedback. The program directors meet each resident at the beginning of the year to review the rotational schedule and to discuss educational goals and expectations. Reviews are then held three times a year to evaluate resident performance and to receive resident feedback regarding program and faculty performance.

Following each rotation, the residents and faculty evaluate each other via an automated on-line evaluation system, E*Value, making the process more efficient and simple, and assuring confidentiality and anonymity when appropriate.
